Environmental Education - School Programs

Educating younger generations is the starting place for creating an informed, aware, and empowered public. The Solana Center Education Team provides San Diego communities with a variety of FREE environmental presentations such as topics on Storm Water Awareness, Pollution Prevention and Heathy Marine Ecosystems, and Household Hazardous Waste awareness. The Solana Center also offers school recycling to qualified schools.

Students interact with the Enviroscape model to learn about
watershed health and pollution prevention.

Solana Education Staff incorporates "Eco-Puppets" into each presentation, visually linking the effects of ocean pollution on the biological health of marine life.

FREE Pollution Prevention Presentations
Funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board
Using the interactive Enviroscape watershed model and "Eco-Puppets" in a 45-minute presentation, Solana staff teach elementary school kids how various types of pollutants enter our environment through activities such as driving a car, cleaning the house, and littering on the beach. Students learn how everyday actions in their local watershed can ultimately effect river and ocean health in nearby communities.

FREE Household Hazardous Waste Presentations
Funded by the San Diego Household Hazardous Waste Partnership
Solana Staff teach elementary school kids, through an interactive presentation, about what materials are toxic to humans and the environment and why. Through this hands-on presentation, students will begin to see how household hazardous materials under their sink effect their health and the health of the oceans, rivers, and creeks they swim in. Students will also learn of safer alternatives and be sent home with a variety of literature and other goodies to share with their parents.

S.E.A.L. (Student Environmental Action Leadership)

Beginning in Fall 2000, The S.E.A.L. project began work to work with and educate students from a local High School and Elementary School about what constitutes marine debris, the means by which marine debris ends up on the beach, including being intentionally dumped, accidentally dropped, or indirectly deposited from the land. The High School students became the educators and teachers of elementary age students. Older students learned about marine conservation, pollution prevention and develop leadership and public speaking skills as they taught these lessons to the younger children. This helped empower students to make a difference with easy, practical methods to make changes in their daily lives. The students also created a bilingual (English/Spanish) education display and brochures, giving a visual element to help students retain the information. The brochure enabled students to take home information and become the educators of siblings, parents, and friends about protecting our coastal environment.

Currently, Solana Center is seeking funding for the S.E.A.L Program.
