Encinitas Passes Ban to be Foam Free

We are proud to have contributed to the historic Styrofoam™ (Expanded Polystyrene foam) food container ban in Encinitas. The Encinitas City Council voted in favor of a ban on November 9th, 2016. Solana Center partnered with the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project to raise awareness and educate the community about the environmental impacts of Styrofoam™ on our oceans and marine life. We hosted a booth at the Surfing Madonna Beach Run on October 15, 2016 and introduced our Foam Monster at the event. Community support for protecting our oceans was overwhelming and everyone wanted a photo with our Foam Monster!

We also conducted outreach to Encinitas businesses, developed a list of eco-friendly alternatives, and participated in a workshop hosted by Encinitas for Benefit designed to help local food businesses make the transition. Our Executive Director, Jessica Toth presented a report on Styrofoam™ use in Encinitas and eco-friendly alternatives to the City Council on November 9, 2016. The meeting was attended by community members, and local organizations, many of whom voiced their support of a ban.

Contact our Zero Waste Coordinator for more information about the ban and for a list of eco-friendly food container alternatives.
