 April 2019

"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart."
- Elizabeth Andrews
(First woman organizer of the Labor Party in Wales)

Happy National Volunteer Week!

All over the globe people are celebrating the generous gift of time volunteers give to causes that matter. Every year in the US volunteers generate almost $200 billion in acts of kindness, advocacy, and protection. You are the force that makes it possible to improve this country for so many humans, creatures, and eco systems. For Solana Center, you are an invaluable part of our ability to impact the community; from our workshops to our compost bins, it wouldn't be possible without your generosity and dedication. Thank you!!

And on that note, I want to tell you about some fun things we have coming up. Since it is also Earth month (typically known as Earth Day, but we tend to celebrate all month) we will be all over the County at tons of community events: Oceanside Earth Fair, Spring Garden and Butterfly Festival, Balboa Park Earth Fair, and more! Check out our Community Event volunteer opportunities to join us.

Next, the fair is approaching faster still. We need all hands on deck to get our San Diego County Fair exhibit up and running for the thousands of visitors who will come to learn about sustainable living. Join one of these set up events! And keep an eye out for Fair shift sign ups coming out in a couple weeks: we engage over 100 volunteers throughout the Fair, so grab a shift fast!

Lastly, we recently had some work done on our website, so if you experience any abnormalities please contact volunteer@solanacenter.org.

Peace, love, and compost,

Jackie Bookstein
Community Engagement Coordinator

Got Worms?

The good news is that San Diegans are apparently getting very into worms, the bad news is that they are buying them faster than we can grow them. We are renovating our worm bins to accommodate a higher demand but we need a blob or two to jump start reproduction.

If you have worms to spare we would greatly appreciate donations! They will be given a very good home at our Center and go forth to provide worm bins to many homes around San Diego and teach thousands of people about vermicomposting. Email volunteer@solanacenter.org to coordinate a drop or just come by any time we are open! (T/Th 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM and Sat 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM).

Write for Sustainability

Looking to volunteer remotely and skilled at writing? We are looking for a few avid writers and sustainability enthusiasts to help us get a few blog posts out there. We would give you guidelines on the content and provide resources to get started and then let you put your writing skills to work for sustainability! Contact volunteer@solanacenter.org to learn more.

Calling All Coffee Grounds!

Our Food Cycle Program is growing faster still. Over a hundred locals bring us their households' supply of organic waste every few weeks, helping us divert thousands of pounds from the landfill every month. With this growth we need more ASP bins, more buckets, more volunteers (click to join!), and buckets and buckets of coffee grounds. Coffee grounds are a valuable ingredient that help our piles heat up allowing the material to decompose much faster.

We are calling on our community of volunteers to help us bring in those coffee grounds by the boat load. Most cafes will give your their daily supply of grounds, it just needs to be coordinated and brought to the Center. If you are looking to do some extra good deeds we'd love your help! Even one delivery will help, and routine deliveries are even better. Email volunteer@solanacenter.org for more details and to coordinate a drop.

March Volunteer Impact

Volunteers gathered around our mixing tubs to pre-soak bedding for new worm bins. The bins are all lovely and ready to go thanks to our wonderful volunteers, now we just need to replenish our worm supply. Email volunteer@solanacenter.org to donate a few of your extra squigglers.

Another 4.6 cubic yard bin filled with organic waste! Each month volunteers gather to help us get about 1,500 pounds of waste diverted from the landfill and into our aerated static piles to cook into delicious nutritious compost. It sure is messy work but it is saving the planet 60 buckets at a time. Thank you volunteers! Join our next build on April 16th (click here!)

Our Zero Waste task force helped divert and tabulate waste at the Encinitas State of the City Address. With the combined effort of our volunteers and the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce we were able to reach an amazing 97% diversion rate, sending only 8 pounds of trash to the landfill from a 300 person event. Way to set the bar Encinitas!
