Volunteers help our staff engage workshop attendees through our lecture and composting demonstrations, teach sustainable practices that support a healthy planet, and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives.

In this workshop, we will cover

  • What is composting and why it is so important
  • Various types of compost bin options and how to pick which one works best for your needs
  • What tools and materials you’ll need
  • Which items are compostable and which to avoid
  • How to build, maintain, and troubleshoot a compost pile

Volunteer support can also include the following:

  • Setting up / breaking down demo site
  • Advancing PowerPoint slides or flipping our educational chart
  • Engaging attendees in activities related to the lesson

Volunteer Shifts

  • 4:00 to 8:00 pm (2 volunteers)

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

  • Attire: Wear clothes that are comfortable for standing in and appropriate to the weather and location. 

  • Bring: Reusable water bottle, snacks for break-time.

  • Experience Needed: At least one volunteer event with Solana Center prior, unless you are a Master Composter graduate, are familiar with Solana Center, or are familiar with the workshop topic. 

  • Age Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Physical Requirements: Must be willing to do hands-on work with worms and other compost critters and able to lift up to 20 pounds.

  • Safety: All volunteers must bring to their volunteer shift the day of the event either: proof of vaccination, either through your issued vaccination card or through California’s Digital Covid-19 Vaccine Record, or proof of a negative PCR test (only PCR tests will be accepted) taken within 7 days of the event.
