Pre-order online by 10/13 for pick up at Fallbrook Mission Resource Conservation District event on 10/19 or Solana Center in Encinitas
ENCINITAS – Solana Center for Environmental Innovation (Solana Center), in collaboration with the County of San Diego and SoCalWaterSmart, is offering rain barrels to San Diego County residents for a discount. This is part of a larger effort to conserve rain water for use on plants and outdoor landscaping rather than using water from the tap or hose. Water from the tap has been treated to drinking water standards, which is typically unnecessary for outdoor irrigation.
Though rain barrels retail for $129, they can be purchased from Solana Center for just $90, an instant savings of $39. If the purchaser lives in an unincorporated area within the county, a $30 discount applies. Once purchased, San Diego County Water Authority customers may apply for a $35 rebate, bringing the total cost of the rain barrel to, potentially, $25, limited to 2 per household.
Combining multiple discounts and programs helps San Diegans win by encouraging them to spend less on conservation devices, use less tap water and reuse high quality untreated water to help plants thrive, said Solana Center community engagement coordinator Jackie Bookstein.
For those who are interested, Solana Center has rain barrels installed on its property in Encinitas for area residents to view how two barrels can be attached for maximum water collection and outfitted with a hose bib for outdoor watering. Each rain barrel captures up to 50 gallons of water for use where plants need it most.
Order online at https://www.solanacenter.org/resources/purchase-rain-barrel before Sunday, October 13 for pick up on Saturday, October 19.
