Engage our next class of Master Composters in the wonders of creating healthy, living soil! Volunteers help our staff engage workshop attendees through our lecture and composting demonstrations, teach sustainable practices that support a healthy planet, and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives.

This Master Composter Course takes place at a beautiful location – Surprise Farm Retreat Center. Give back to your compost community and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this unique location! 

Volunteer support can also include the following:

  • Setting up / breaking down demo site
  • Checking in attendees before class
  • Advancing PowerPoint slides or flipping our educational chart
  • Helping course attendees with their compost piles
  • Engaging attendees in other activities related to the lesson

Volunteer Shifts

  • Week 1: March 11th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (2 volunteers)

  • Week 2: March 18th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (2 volunteers)

  • Week 3: April 1st, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (2 volunteers)

  • Week 4: April 8th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (2 volunteers)

  • Week 5: April 15th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (2 volunteers)

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes (Please Read) 

  • Attire: Wear clothes that are comfortable for standing in and appropriate to the weather and location. 

  • Bring: Reusable water bottle, snacks for break-time.

  • Experience Needed: Must have a working knowledge of composting. Master Composter graduates are a perfect fit for this volunteer opportunity! If you are new to Solana Center but want to volunteer, email volunteer@solanacenter.org to inquire. 

  • Age Requirements: Must be at least 14 years of age. If under the age of 18, parent or guardian must attend with volunteer. 

  • Physical Requirements: Must be willing to do hands-on work with worms and other compost critters and able to lift up to 20 pounds.

  • Safety: All volunteers must bring to their volunteer shift the day of the event either: proof of vaccination, either through your issued vaccination card or through California’s Digital Covid-19 Vaccine Record, or proof of a negative PCR test (only PCR tests will be accepted) taken within 7 days of the event, according to County guidelines.
